Zopiclone is intended for transient and short-term insomnia, typically for a duration of a few days to a maximum of 4 weeks, including the tapering-off period. Long-term use is not recommended due to the risk of tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms.
Dosage: The usual adult dose is 7.5 mg, taken once, just before bedtime. A lower starting dose of 3.75 mg is recommended for elderly patients or those with liver or kidney problems to minimize the risk of side effects.
Administration:
Take it only when you can get at least 7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew it.
It can be taken with or without food, but a high-fat meal may reduce its effect.
Safety Precautions:
Do not drink alcohol while taking zopiclone, as it can cause excessive sedation, breathing problems, coma, and potentially death.
Avoid driving or operating machinery the morning after use, as the effects can last up to 12 hours and impair alertness and coordination.
Do not stop taking it suddenly after prolonged use, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms and rebound insomnia (worse sleep problems than before). Consult your doctor for a gradual reduction plan.
Be aware of potential complex sleep behaviors, such as sleepwalking or sleep-driving, which can occur with or without alcohol use. If this happens, stop the medication immediately and contact your doctor.
Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially opioids, as the combination increases the risk of serious adverse effects.
Common Side Effects: The most frequent side effects include a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth, dry mouth, and next-day drowsiness or dizziness.
Always use zopiclone exactly as prescribed by your doctor and discuss any concerns or side effects with a healthcare professional.
